| The spray-dried polymeric resin waterproofing membrane used on these foundation walls is from cfiFORAM.
The foam expands and then dries to a rock-hard finish, although it can easily be cut down to the correct grade level. The idea is to spray it on more liberally than needed upfront. The particular method of waterproofing used must be suitable for Insulated Concrete Wall Forms (ICF's) if you choose to build your garage walls with ICF's. You cannot just apply a coat of tar on these alternative building materials as you could with a regular concrete foundation. The tar might eat away at the foam and destroy your ICF. Water-proofing below grade is critical to keeping the foundation watertight. The foundation should be fully cured before this step is taken. |
![]() The waterproofing is thickly applied below grade prior to filling in around the foundation. |
![]() The dried foam is rock-hard and securely bonded to the foundation wall. |
![]() Gravel is poured around the foundation first, then that will eventually be covered with fill dirt. This is looking down 12-14 feet or so to grade level. |
![]() You can see that more gravel will be needed before all is said and done. |
![]() This view shows the uphill side of the garage that has been dug into the slope. Gravel and earth will fill in up to a point on the waterproofed wall, and then slate or stonework will cover any remaining exposed wall. The uncovered wall to the left is totally exposed with three vehicle bays, and so will not have waterproofing sprayed on it. |
