We visited Craig Toney's factory where he makes the stones that are being used on our fireplace stack, as well as around the log home structure itself.
|
![]() At the factory, concrete is mixed and then poured into special rubberized molds of different shapes. |
![]() The individual molds are placed on pallets and then on drying racks where the concrete is allowed to cure. |
![]() One of many large groups of drying racks. |
![]() Shades of powdered dyes are mixed into the different molds to approximate the natural hues of the mountain environment - browns, rusts, pale greens, grays, etc. |
![]() Here Craig shows Lesley a stack of stones that are ready to be delivered to her house. The stones have been curing for awhile. Craig has to stop his site work intermittently to return to the factory to make more stones. They get used up quickly as you can see from the stonework (below) that has already been done on a large retaining wall at the property. |
|
Note the subtle earth tones and the craftsmanship of this stone masonry process. |
![]() You can see how well the stonework blends into the evolving log home environment. Lesley and our site manager, Wayne Sizemore, evaluate the work in progress. |
Here is a closeup of stone work adjacent to some of the supportive pillars under the deck. |
![]() The pillars themselves are even being covered in stone. |
![]() And it won't be long before the stonework embraces the whole garage level of the house! Cool, huh?! |
