How the House Looks on Dec 7th
Compared to How it Looked on Oct 1st

This house is a work in progress, not unlike what happens when an artist paints a complex scene on canvas.

Every day small steps move us forward: another stone is put in place here, a new pile of gravel appears there, stacks of lumber come and go with the sound of ten noisy hammers, dust swirls, saws hum, a worker's radio blares, and the chimney creeps slowly skyward...

At the end of each day bent nails and mounds of sawdust and dozens of empty cans of soft drinks hint at the dozens of workers that have laboured there.

Like the artist's paint dabs, a log structure evolves. Everything is changeable – what looks good one day doesn't always work the next. Boards are nailed down today, only to be torn up tomorrow as spaces are reconsidered, and then reconfigured. A single hasty miscalculation can mean days of reworking.

Everything depends on the things that went before, and on the errors that may or may not lie hidden behind formed walls. Beware!

New houses harbor secrets, especially for those homeowners who mistakenly assume that they don't have to be there on a daily basis throughout the construction process.

This is what the house looked like on October 1st. The courses of logs form an empty shell with the barest hint of a roof while gaping holes promise windows where there are none. There are also no garage doors, nothing is framed in yet, support beams are still being put in place, and Lesley and Dr. Ellen are still having to climb that insufferable ladder to the second story. Can you see it there behind the small everygreen?

But look! This is what the house looks like on Dec 7th. There is still much to be done but now the Barna roof system is in place and shingles are being installed; and a majestic chimney rises ten feet above its base. Stonework dresses the retaining wall and garage exterior. And two coats of Sikkens stain covers most of the exterior logs. (Stain can only be applied at 50-degrees or warmer weather, so on cooler days the work shifts to the interior of the house.) Best of all, interior stairs now replace those terrible ladders!

A break in the fall weather this weekend hopefully will allow the painters to finish staining the exterior, which right now looks quite mottled. The weather in the mountains, though, can't always be predicted!

Inside and out, work continues...rain or shine. Some days, though, the process seems endless.

This is a view of the property from the 2nd story deck. Clearing and debris removal work is almost done now and cut logs wait in piles to be split.

The tree debris is mulched for forest pathways.
