Part I - Assembling the Walls


Assembling the ICF forms for poured concrete walls is quite a complex process. It looks easy enough but a great deal goes into this process to ensure that the walls can support the poured concrete until it hardens. The images here are instructive on how the ICF system works.

Once these walls are poured and other structural supports added, it will all tie together and you will recognize it as a formed first floor garage. Trust us! Yes, you still need a little imagination at this point...but...but...

This is what it looks like upfront - a bunch of ICF forms without any apparent orgnization to them. It hardly looks like a house will form from them.Barna rep, David Terry, surveys the scene before he heads back to the Barna factory in Oneida, TN.


An aluminum track goes down first and is secured to the cement footers. The ICF forms are then pressed into the track in evolutionary fashion.


Special corner ICF forms are used to connect 90-degree sections of wall. Bent rebar also informs those corners for added stability.


Rebar informs all walls both vertically and horizontally.









Lesley shows how the footers graduate in height along a wall.

A sudden downpour on the mountain today left us wet and definitely 'socked in' as they say. But those stately walls didn't seem to mind at all! (Can you hear Dr. Ellen running for cover with her camera?)
