We Now have a Working Fireplace!

Every system that is activated in a new house is cause for celebration! It seemed to take forever to build the chimney box and to install the fireplace guts, and then for the mastory to be added. Then, of course, we had to add a hearth and a mantal.

Finally, the installer came back out to cap the chimney and supervise the lighting of the first fire. Hurrah!

This is not any ordinary fireplace, but a Fireplace Extrordinair – this catalytic wood fireplace gives you the enjoyment of a real wood fire but with the heating efficiency of a furnace. Heat circulates throughout the house using a remote convection fan that draws fresh air from outside the home into a special cavity around the fireplace, heats it, and then circulates it. It is capable of heating up to 3,000 sq ft of living space. It also uses the latest catalytic technology to reduce emissions by 90% compared to conventional fireplaces. Lesley is applying multiple coats of clear polyurathane to the fireplace mantal which was carved by an artisan from Sevierville, TN. See all the dust in the air? That also never seems to end!

A view from the loft.

A propane DutchWest Vermont Stove sits on the other side of the wall. It shares the chimney with the Fireplace Extrordinair and is designed to take the chill off while dining on the screened-in porch. Sikken stained exterior logs form two walls of the porch. This little stove is a real beaut!

The porch is still in process but this gives you an idea of what it will look like. The same tile is also used in the large front foyer and in the elevator. The porch tile has just been grouted and is being cleaned in this picture.
