| Indeed, it is a bittersweet thrill. First of all, you are excited to get them. But then you have to have enough space to put everything and how we would have done that without a 2,000 sq ft garage well, dunno!
Everything arrives at pretty much the same time and it's heavy stuff! Plus it all comes boxed with varying degrees of skillful labeling. One local company spells out the room the fixture is designed for on its very helpful labels, others just send mounds of boxes and let you figure it out. The Bill of Laden itself requires skillful reading, as everything is listed in terms of ITEM NUMBERS, not necessarily in order and rarely by ITEM DESCRIPTION. Oh, well, it is all part of the experience of building a new home! But by now we could serve as consultants to companies who wish to improve their homeowner interface... |
![]() Here Lesley checks off the BILL OF LADEN for lighting fixtures with a deliveryman. Each box has to be accounted for and intialed, and then the boxes have to be arranged, first by floor, and then by room, so that it makes sense to those who will do the installing. |

![]() This guy from Walker's Supply was very helpful...CLAP CLAP CLAP! He didn't leave until everything was orderly and Lesley had a recognizable list of all items that had been delivered. |
![]() How's this for a Bill of Laden?! And it is just for lighting fixtures. |
![]() Traves breaks open the boxes of plumbing fixtures... |
![]() ...and sets them in a row for easy installation. Of course, they have to be first carried to the proper floor and proper bathroom; sinks and showers, too. But he is strong and he works partime for plumber Cary Grant who is not as pretty as the real Cary Grant but he is alive (I am quoting Cary here). |
![]() These tall boxes contain built-in bookcases and pantry shelving and office units. See our hand-written labels on them? We had to separate them first by floor, and then by location, and we are here to tell you that these labels were not very user friendly! |
![]() Without a working elevator (that's coming soon), we had to invent a way to get the boxes up to the second and third floors without having to navigate unfinished stairs. What you see is a small rental lift that took the boxes up to the front porch roof and from there they were hauled in through an open window. |
![]() Boxes of custom shelving sit in the livingroom, waiting to be uncrated for various second floor locations. This is definitely a good source of cardboard which we cut up and re-use to protect the hardwood floors! So don't throw them away prematurely! |
