Construction of the Interior Chimney and Firebox
for the Fireplace Xtrordinair

Ordering a Fireplace Xtrordinair is one thing, making it fit properly into the required space is another. Expect surprises!

The unit comes with detailed instructions for designing a chimney stack and hearth around it. Add fresh air intakes and a space for a blower unit and exact measurements become especially critical. Like all manuals, this manual is less than enlightening at times.

Beware: you have to check and double-check measurements...always. Take nothing for granted!

The hearth will go through several morphs before a workable plan is reached. Here Lesley compares notes with Darryl and Brandon Martin, our highly skilled finishing carpenters.

The problem is where to put the blower unit for the fireplace..the specs offer several options but which option is best, and why?...so more heads join in to problem-solve.

After much consternation it was decided that the blower unit could be put on the other side of wall: however, the fresh air intakes had to be vented below the floor and out the garage wall which posed a whole new set of problems. More on that later...

ALSO, the interior stack has to be higher than expected originally. Grumble, grumble..

THIS high...! All the way to the top!

So the structure is built and the Fireplace Xtrordinair expert arrives to inspect the situation and insert the unit so that the walls of the unit and chimney can be formed in for later stonework.

The unit is hoisted up to the second story (the main living floor).

First the unit is set on the hearth. Note the two vertical pipes. One is for this fireplace, and the other is for a Vermont Stove on the other side of the wall that will share the chimney.

It takes some doing to fit the unit in place.

Next, we have to decide where (how high) to put the fireplace mantel. Even that has limitations – and (of course) it has to be put much higher up than anticipated. Such changes are routine and confound things on an almost daily basis. Expect this! Also expect everything to cost more than originally anticipated.

So there you are...the fire box is set in place and the interior stack is formed. Even the space for the mantel is secured by 2x4's, waiting until the stonework is done before it is actually installed. Next, the stonework...
