A chimney is one of the most vulnerable parts of a structure because it is exposed to weathering on all sides.
The intersection between the chimney and the roof is a critical spot where several trades have to come together to provide a watertight joint. Base flashing is installed on top of the roof sheathing, extending horizontally under roof shingles for a minimum of 4 inches. And the chimney must be a full two feet above any surrounding object located on the roof within 10 feet. The images below illustrate the stages in the construction of this chimney stack. Once the fireplace is installed, a chimney cap will then be installed on top of the stack. This cap provides basic flue protection from rain and animal invasion. |
