Finding a Builder

...not just any builder, mind you...but Lesley wanted to find one who is experienced in the building of Barna Log Homes. Barna headquarters came through and hooked Lesley up with Bill Grey who builds Barna Logs Homes exclusively, approximately eight a year. Bill agreed to do Lesley's, which was cause for celebration, indeed!

Shopping for builders outside of one's home territory (in Lesley's case, Largo, FL) is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. There are a lot of builders out there but buyer beware! Interview them, follow-up on references, and make sure they are licensed and experienced in the kind of home that you wish to build. While there are lots of log homes being built today, Barna's system is unique.

Says Dr. Ellen: In Lesley's case, it was also important to find a builder who is happy to work with a woman. How do you know that? During the interview process, meet their wife and children, watch how they are with them...good marriages produce builders who are sympatico with woman clients. Forget the gruff ones, theirs is a man's world. Something else about Bill Grey to note – he plans on being friends with his clients after all is said and done. Now THAT'S a bonus!

Bill first came out to the Chestnut Tops property to talk with Lesley. He brought his wife and two grandchildren with him. Of course, he didn't know that Dr. Ellen was also sizing him up!

Bill has a ready smile and a great sense of humor.

We then went out to the Barna Log Home that he is currently building in Pellissippi, TN so that we could see him in action, and see what his work looked like. He was patient and talkative, and he gave us a complete run-down on the things that we can soon expect to see going on at Lesley's property.

Lesley and Bill review the terms of his builders contract.

She signs...

And then it's a deal! He will be out to the property next week to watch the footers being put in. At that point he takes over – his role will be to fully construct the 2,000 sq ft poured concrete garage and then dry-in Lesley's Barna Log home.

Bill dons a remote 'clicker' to access Lesley's property at Chestnut Tops. He also wore a red shirt today for Ellen! (She says every good field pix needs some red in it.) Now the fun begins!
