Until the stairs are finally installed, Dr. Ellen's lenscapes are limited by the height of the ladders she is willing to climb. (Some of us are obviously more astute than others).
That said, there is a lot happening on the third floor these days and now you REALLY get a feel for how tall this structure is! The trick is to not look down. |
![]() This is Dr. Ellen's eye-level view of the third floor from a tall ladder on the second floor. Oh, she could get all the way up to the 3rd floor...but why? Her lens will reach where it needs to reach, and she still gets home in one piece. |
![]() A lofty view, eh? Note how the beams are notched into the wall. |
![]() How about THIS view? |
![]() A classic pose...the cigarette...the focused attention...the bleeding middle finger. |
![]() Any number of these beautiful beams are bowed from the effects of onsite weathering...so in this sequence you will see some not so high-tech maneuvers for straightening the beams. Here 'Roach' stretches his body over 4 beams while his feet inch the beam under them towards some predetermined center point. Once two beams are properly positioned in relation to each other, they are temporarily secured by stretching and nailing a 2x4 across them. When flooring is put down it secures the beams permanently in place without the bowed effect (hopefully). |
![]() More acrobatics are visible here. |
![]() And here. |
![]() It's hard to know which view I like best...but this does prove that looking UP is not all that bad! |
![]() Meanwhile, Lesley takes her daily tour of things and stops to enjoy the gorgeous view off the screened porch. Well, the screening and the porch windows and doors aren't in yet but you get the idea... |
![]() Some structural problems are found at the ground floor (garage) level so Lesley and Bob, her general contractor, review the options available. A critical footer was missed when the concrete floor was poured, so a large square block of floor will have to be excised at a specific place and a new footer dug, then poured. Without that all-important footer a new structural I-Beam that has to be placed there will most surely crack the garage floor, sooner than later. Barna says the load at that particular point is more than 36,000 lbs! Weight-bearing points in a garage meant to hold a heavy two-story Barna log home cannot be taken lightly! But the trusty I-Beam rescue team has been called in, along with a scheduled consult with a structural engineer. |
![]() Again, the process of visualizing all of this 'structural stuff' is complex and demanding. But Lesley always has a set of plans with her, along with an assortment of tools and tape measures. And highlighters! Not to mention an upbeat and congenial attitude for all concerned. |
![]() Gads, how did we MISS that (!) she says...as Wayne Sizemore of Woodland Homes looks over her shoulder. |
![]() Oh, well, the needed supports and I-Beams are on their way and will be installed shortly, and the structural engineer will be here first thing on Friday. |
![]() Every day at the property is a learning experience. |
![]() And often a visual treat, as well. |
